Reading Katie's Diary

from Rich Mattson: the demos volume 2 by Rich Mattson

about

This turned out to be a pretty neat demo. I was recording a band, and the singer and one of the band members were kind of an item. She left for awhile, and he went and read her journal, looking for some references to him. I thought it was a pretty lame thing to do, so I wrote a song about it. The definitive version came out on Ol' Yeller's "Penance" album from 2003.

lyrics

Reading Katie’s Diary
It was so important to her
She had to write it down
Stuff about all her problems
Stuff ‘bout living underground
And now that she’s away you just read it
And you think that it’s okay
She’s just a fragile little lamb-child
Keeping the wolves at bay
Need you know more?
What’d you think she was a whore?
Well, now that you know the truth
That oughta even the score
She’ll never lose you.
She’ll never love you-oh no…no
Reading Katie’s diary
Shame on you
Hope you found what you wanted
You just couldn’t ask, now could you?
Communication is one thing
Believing is another
Trust is really the best thing
That you can receive from a lover
She broke your heart
No, she ain’t no man-eater
No, you never were quite right
Now you know for sure
She’ll never love you.
