March of 2003 we took off on a 3 week tour, starting in Nashville, going through Mississippi, greater Texas and culminating in a big showcase at SXSW in Austin. Things were looking good for the band and we were having a magical time on the road at the peak of our powers. On the Friday night of the Conference we went to see the Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams, and Willie Nelson at the Austin Music Hall. Somehow we were ushered straight in with no questions asked. We felt like we were flying the whole night. At one point Gary Louris (of the Jayhawks) came up and asked us, "So, are you guys gonna do the show?"
To which I said, "Yes! What show are you talking about?"
"Guthrie Theater, opening for us, March 24!" said Gary.
"Holy shit that's a day after we get back from this tour! Hmm, let me think about it..(looks around, shrugs) Ok we'll do it!!"
The idea for the show was to do it "acoustic-style" for whatever reason..as if the Guthrie was more conducive to acoustic music but we complied and pared down our set. Our sound tech, Jay Perlman, recorded it on DAT and it's been sitting there 21 years until now..Dale and I listened to it last summer and asked each other, "Why the hell don't we put this out?" So, here ya go! Enjoy.
